The answer to this question depends on whether you include the capital outlay for the traditional machinery into the equation. If not then traditional tractor and boom sprayer is far cheaper per hectare currently when looking at broadacre spraying and using a 3rd party Ag contractor.
However, drones are sometimes the only means of applying liquid chemicals, fertilisers or seed when the terrain is to steep or too wet for example.

Most Ag drones have similar battery capacity which equates to around 8-10 minutes flying time when fully operational with seeding or spraying. Tank sizes can vary between 10 litres to 70 litres.

An agricultural drone operates from the air, covering large areas quickly and accessing terrain that ground-based machinery cannot reach. An agricultural rover is a self-driving ground vehicle that navigates crop rows at ground level, delivering treatment directly into the canopy from below.

The XAG P100 Pro drone can apply foliar fertilisers, biostimulants, plant growth regulators and liquid micronutrients. It can also broadcast granular products such as seed and fertiliser pellets. What it cannot do, under current UK rules, is apply fungicides, herbicides, algicides or similar chemical treatments. Those must come from the ground.

Fungicides, herbicides, algicides and other chemical crop protection products that are not currently approved for aerial application in the UK must be delivered via ground-based equipment. The XAG R100 and R200 rovers are designed specifically for this kind of work in orchards, vineyards and glasshouses, where conventional machinery often struggles to operate effectively.

The rover is programmed with the route on its first pass, either by driving it manually or by mapping the area using satellite imagery. From that point, it repeats the route autonomously, maintaining its position accurately and adjusting its speed to suit the terrain as it goes. The operator monitors progress remotely and doesn't need to walk alongside the machine during treatment.

Yes. The XAG rovers are built to handle the kind of gentle to moderate gradients found in many English vineyards and hillside orchards. Their drive systems manage inclines and uneven surfaces reliably, which makes them well suited to sites in the North and South Downs, the Cotswolds and similar terrain where conventional spraying equipment can be difficult to use safely.

Agricultural drone batteries typically support around eight to ten minutes of active flying time under full operational load. In practice, this means the drone returns to refuel or swap its battery regularly throughout a job, with quick turnarounds and downtime kept to a minimum. The XAG P100 Pro battery charges fully in around eleven minutes.

Drone spraying has been used extensively in Asia for well over a decade with strong results, particularly for foliar nutrition and plant protection applications. The key advantage over traditional boom spraying is precision; the drone applies product exactly where it's needed, with the downwash effect driving it into the canopy rather than leaving it on the surface. For terrain that boom sprayers can't access, the drone is often the only practical option.

The technology is well suited to commercial arable farming, orchards, vineyards, commercial glasshouses and polytunnels, golf courses and forestry operations. Essentially, any site where terrain, access, soil sensitivity or operator safety makes conventional machinery difficult to deploy effectively is a strong candidate.
